Where Design Is Going
October 6, 2025

Design is always in motion. Staying current means understanding how technologies, habits, and expectations shift and how that shapes what and how we design.

One major shift is the growing role of artificial intelligence and connected devices. Tools like AI (artificial intelligence) and IoT (Internet of Things) make products more responsive and adaptive. This includes smart home devices that learn from everyday use or wearables that adjust to the body in real time. These systems are helping products become more personal and more useful.

Sustainability is also becoming a core part of product development. There’s a growing focus on reducing waste, choosing better materials, and designing things that last longer. This often means making products easier to repair or upgrade, rather than replace.

Nature is another source of inspiration. Biomimicry, the practice of learning from how natural systems work, is helping designers solve problems in new ways. It’s about using nature’s logic to make products that are both efficient and thoughtful.

The way people interact with products is also evolving. Human-centered design puts the user first, focusing on comfort, clarity, and ease of use. From better ergonomics to interfaces that adapt to context, the goal is to make products feel natural in everyday life.

Finally, new digital tools are changing how design decisions are made. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) let designers explore products in a virtual space before anything is built. They help test ideas, get feedback early, and make more confident design decisions before anything physical is made.

At The Design Laboratory, we design with the future in mind. These changes aren’t distant trends, they’re part of how we work now.
